“Mitsuri,” Shinobu said, glancing toward her companion. “Why don’t you join?” Mitsuri looked at her in nervous surprise.
“Me? Isn’t it super competitive?” Mitsuri asked, nervous but unable to hide the spark of excitement in her voice.
“No!” Kyoujuro said.
“Yes,” Obanai said at the same time.
“Yes! You should join the event, Miss Mitsuri,” Tanjiro said, encouraged brightly.
Obanai glanced toward the sign-up tablet and lifted one hand in its direction. “Sign-up is over there. Do what you want.” Mitsuri watched him as if waiting for permission. He held her gaze for a beat longer than necessary, then gave one small nod.
That should have been the end of it. His intention was to keep his distance. Instead, he heard himself say, “If you’re nervous, I can put you on my team.” The words settled into the space between them, deliberate now that they had been spoken. Obanai’s jaw tightened. He did not take them back.
OR
At heart, Mitsuri believed she wanted what most girls wanted. A life built with someone who accepted her completely, unusual traits and all. She simply never expected that search for connection to lead her into the gamer world.
