Their toes wiggled rhythmically on the dog's belly, fingers caressing the book in their hands. They barely registered the weight of the couch shifting as Kakashi sat down next to them.
His gentle voice brought them back from the apocalyptic world to their house. "Doin' alright, kid?"Red and blue eyes shifted from the book to his masked face. Their colors flowing like lava lamps. "Why? Something wrong?"
He scratched his neck before opening his arms, proposing a hug. The small child crawled in his embrace and wrapped their thin arms around him, nuzzling his chest.
"I know this book is kinda heavy emotionally, and you tend to get really invested in things. I guess I'm just reminding you that we're safe. We're home and we're safe." He ruffled their hair. "It's nice to take a break once in a while."They snorted. "You're one to talk."
"Hey! I know I'm not good at self care but I'm trying"
"I know. You're a good dad." They kissed his hand, rubbing it on their cheek. "I bet that was just an excuse to get a hug. You missed me too much."
The man's warm chuckle filled the silence of the room. "Sure did."

Summary
Team seven was a disaster.
So Kakashi had:
A loud and rude gremlin who was too flashy to be a ninja and just wanted to be respected.
A smart gremlin with anger issues who only cared for romance.
A prodigy gremlin with a superiority complex too blinded by revenge to care about others.
And a 'special kid' nonverbal gremlin who didn't like mean people or hurting others. Plus, that one couldn't even use sign language to communicate.He needed to make this a ninja team. And maybe help his kids' traumas heal along the way.
