    Summary

“I, I came back!” Jon’s eyes were wide and his face twisted with more emotion than Martin had perhaps ever seen from him. “I came back for-”
“Yeah, well, nobody asked you to do that,” Martin muttered under his breath, barely loud enough to hear, and Jon’s heart stopped.
“Wh-” Jon’s breathing rattled his hollow chest and his voice was high and reedy. “What?”
Martin’s face betrayed nothing but the purest apathy. “I mean, maybe things would’ve been better for everyone if you hadn’t come back.”

    Summary

Martin hadn't heard from Jon in a week. That wasn't such a strange thing; Even though Jon was no longer on the run and had technically been back at work for over a month, he had barely been in contact with any of the Archives staff. Going one week without hearing from Jon wouldn't be anything at all to worry about, if it weren't for one thing:

    They had a date.

AU where the Archives staff notice Jon is missing and rescue him from the Circus.

    Summary

“I’m fine, I’m fine,” Jon said from where he'd fallen on the floor, “I just need to get a statement.”

    “No,” Martin replied eloquently.

    “What do you mean, ‘no?’”

“You’re not going to do work right now, Jon, you can barely stand.” Jon got back to his feet, straightened his back, and held out his arms in a defiant 'ta-da' gesture. Martin wondered, not for the first time, how he’d managed to fall for such a stubborn idiot.

Rather than voicing that thought, however, he took out his phone, pulled up the maps app, and handed it to Jon. “Put your address into my phone, I’m taking you home.”

    “What?”

“If you won’t let me take you to a doctor, I’m at least taking you away from statements, and tape recorders, and work.”

Jon is sick. Martin takes care of him. They have a few conversations they've been putting off.

    Summary

“You should really do something about that cut on your neck. I know it’s not bleeding anymore, but still. Can I…?”
Jon nodded. Martin guided him to his desk and into his chair, and he put up no resistance. Whatever adrenaline rush had sustained him through his confrontations with Daisy and Elias had long since worn off, and he was more exhausted than he’d ever been. Martin left, and he was too tired to even properly wonder where he was going. He just sat there, head empty, until Martin came back holding a first aid kit in one hand and some wet paper towels in the other.
Martin set down the first aid kit and held up the towels apologetically. “Sorry, this was the best I could find. May I?” He’d already asked that, but Jon didn’t mind giving his assent a second time. It was nice to have someone ask permission before touching him, for once.

After Jon's confrontation with Elias, he and Martin have a talk.

NOTE: Although this work is part of a series, you do not need to read the previous story to understand this one. It should stand on its own.

    Summary

Jonathan Sims is standing on his doorstep. At least, something that looks like Jonathan Sims. There’s certainly a creature somewhere in the mass of statements in their archives that steals the skin of innocent, prickly academics and impersonates them to their colleagues. That would make more sense than Jon being here, now.

Martin opens the door anyway. “Jon? What are you doing here?”

Jon startles, then looks Martin up and down, something like relief flicking across his face. “Ah, Martin! You’re um…” he clears his throat. “You weren’t at work. And you didn’t answer my calls.”

“I’m really sorry about that, I must have slept in, and I didn’t get them until, well, now, and-”

“It’s fine, it’s fine,” Jon says stiffly, “I just thought I’d check on you.”

“In person?” Martin asks, then realizes that he probably shouldn’t be quite so brusque with his boss, and amends it with a quick, “You really didn’t need to come all this way.”

Jon looks at him flatly. “The last time you missed work, you were nearly eaten by worms.” And that’s… Okay, that’s fair.

Martin is sick. Jon is paranoid. These two things do not mix well.
