They'd look up and watch her intently—like she was something so important. Like she held the moon and the stars and his future in her hands.
It's terrifying.
Was terrifying.
She misses his eyes, and how they swam in the sunlight to create a new color. How they sparkled when Dina spoke to him in a way that made him laugh.
She can never get them right on paper. And she tries. And tries.
His laugh used to be so clear in her mind.

Dina raises her mug, holds it out for him to clank against.
“What exactly are we cheersin’ to?” Joel asks, smacking his cup against hers without an answer.
She takes a sip, swallowing her tanned, sweetened coffee and releasing a long, “Ahhh,” as she does so. “To…loving people enough that you stay awake the whole night for them.”
Joel doesn’t repeat it back, just lets the words settle deep in his gut, sliding on down his esophagus much like hot coffee that burns the whole way.
“Sure thing, kiddo. Sure thing.”
or: The Joel and Dina become something like best buds despite Ellie refusing to so much as even acknowledge Joel's existence fic.
