Summary
It is 10:37PM on a Thursday night, and you are staring at a bottle of Commodore Red. You're alone in your dingy studio apartment. You haven't had any booze in nearly a month now, but you hadn't been able to resist the cheap wine's siren call when you'd stopped by Frittte for a pack of cigarettes on your walk home from the 41st that night. There isn't anything particular about today that's made the sobriety harder. Nothing more than usual, at least. But you’ve felt like a dam for the last few days, and you can feel the cracks widening within you as you stare at the dark, thick glass of the wine bottle.

Summary
You honestly don’t think too much about it when you check the weather that morning. Never really think about it unless you see an eclipse in the forecast. Otherwise it’s just a habit you’ve picked up over time. Wake up. Brush your teeth. Shower. Check the day’s weather. You see the flood warnings, but you feel nothing. The Immateria has been flooding the fields for years by now. You’re just grateful you won’t have to be watching over your back for the umps during your game that day.

Summary
It starts simply enough. Kala and Riley are talking about their families, and Riley mentions the time her dad visited her in Amsterdam.
“You smoked marijuana with your father?” Kala asks incredulously.
Riley laughs, thinking back to when she gave her father and his friends Ecstasy before their concert in Reykjavik. “I’ve done more than that, but yeah. Papa loves pot.”
Laughing as well, Kala shakes her head in disbelief. “I can’t imagine my father smoking it at all, let alone smoking with him.”
“Have you ever smoked?” Riley asks.
Kala shakes her head. “I wouldn’t have even known who to ask about getting it,” she admits sheepishly.
Smirking, Riley leans forward and puts her hand on Kala’s knee. “You don’t really have to worry about that anymore, do you?”

Summary
Will’s fingers find their way to the hem of her shirt, and he’s about to begin lifting it when he feels a small wave of anxiety from Riley. (If he weren’t so in tune with her, he might not have even recognized it for what it was. Will can’t quite put his finger on what the cause is, but it feels like something deeply buried.) Immediately, he pulls his hands away from her. “What’s wrong?” His lets his concern flow into her, trying to make sure she knows he would never do anything she doesn’t want to do.
Riley looks down and bites her lip. “It’s silly,” she answers.
“No,” Will replies. “It’s not.”

Summary
The first time Kala meets Wolfgang, it’s the first week of her junior year of university. Specifically, the first Friday, when all the partying gets started. This has never exactly been her scene (she’s spent many more late nights with her biochemistry books than booze), but after hearing how much she loved her school in the States, Daya had wanted to join her. And when Daya came to college, she expected the full American experience.
So that’s how Kala finds herself holding her younger sister’s hair as she vomits into a toilet in the bathroom of a home they’ve never been to before. Kala had tried to help Daya moderate how much she was drinking, but the younger girl had slipped off at some point to talk to a boy. By the time Kala had found her sister, she’d had at least two shots and another beer. It wasn’t long before the quick drinking caught up with her, and soon she told Kala she didn’t feel so good. Knowing where this was going to lead, Kala found the nearest bathroom.

Summary
Going to Daya’s soccer game that day had not exactly been Kala’s first choice of things to do. But her parents’ pleading eyes had been too much for her to deny, so Kala finds herself sitting in a stiff lawn chair on the side of a field as her younger sister runs around in her red jersey. It’s hot out, but Kala’s never minded the heat all that much, so she does her best to try to get comfortable for the game.
All of the kids playing are in the 8-10 age bracket, young enough for the teams to still be co-ed. Kala watches her sister fondly, but paying all that much attention to what’s actually happening in the game until a skinny boy from the other team scores a goal. The other side of the field cheers, although one person’s voice is easily the loudest. “Yeah, Felix! That’s right!”

Summary
When Kala wakes up on Saturday morning, she finds a text from an unknown number on her phone.
Do you want to come to my place? (Received 3:02 AM)
She’s confused. No one she knows would have messaged her at that hour. Kala wakes up early to visit the local temple every morning, and she doesn’t keep that fact a secret. Plus, her family is a million miles away.
Who is this? (Delivered 8:39 AM)
Unsurprisingly, she doesn’t receive a response right away. If they were asking someone over at three in the morning, they’re probably in bed now, she reasons. Kala puts it out of her mind, choosing instead to get out of bed and concentrate on preparing for her day.

Summary
Finally, after she feels like she may be stuck having to choose between living with Rajan or her family’s disappointed faces, she opens the envelope postmarked from the United States. Inside it she finds a thick packet of paper, the first of which starts with, “Miss Kala Dandekar, we are very pleased to accept you into Elizabeth Hamilton University.” She can’t read the rest through the tears of relief that begin streaming down her face.

Summary
Staring at out at the crowded cafeteria, her heart sinks when she realizes that almost every table is completely occupied. Being unfamiliar with the building, it had taken Kala longer to find her way there. She scans the room. After a few moments, she finds that there is one table that still seems to have free space. Kala walks over and sees that there might be a reason for this. The table is long, with two sections. At the end toward the aisle, there are several students chattering away. But at the other end, there are only two boys sitting across from each other.
(Written for the prompt on Tumblr "Can I sit here? The other tables are full." for Kalagang.)

Summary
When Felix comes to them, Kala feels like she’s regaining a piece of herself that she didn’t know was missing. She doesn’t talk to him much, though. Felix keeps asking about Wolfgang, and it hurts too much for her to talk about anything except how they’re going to save him.
