Eli's lids drooped.

He thought he was prepared, he really did.
But the pain wasn’t sharp anymore, it was everywhere. His mind, his muscles, his breath.
What if he just gave into it, just rested his eyes for a second? If he could just rest his eyes, only for five minutes. He'd wake up again, right? The room quiet, but everything overwhelming. The dread, that unbearable sort of despair lingered, sat tightly into his chest and ate him from within. Because no matter what his father had told him, no matter how he was aware of the harsh realities of Slugterra, nothing could have prepared him for the moment that his friend, who he loved dearly, so dearly, would be lying into his arms, asking him if she was dying. And that he'd be helpless, the ground beneath his feet disappearing as she slipped into unconsciousness, as life seemed to gradually surrender from her features.
