When he returned to Verso, he did not hesitate.
"She could not go through with it," he said in a rush, keeping his voice low enough that only Verso could hear. "The engagement. I offered to take her place. I know this is irregular, I know you have every right to refuse, but I am asking you—"
Verso's hand tightened on his waist, and Gustave's words died in his throat.
"Why?" Verso asked, his pale eyes fixed on Gustave's face with unsettling intensity.
"Why you?" he clarified, his voice quiet but intent. "Why sacrifice yourself for her?"
The question caught Gustave off guard. He opened his mouth, closed it again, searching for the right words.

Eager to escape the pressure and oppressive life of painting, under the roof of the families' lavish manor, Verso's world takes an unexpected turn when he meets Gustave. A sweet, hard working engineering student with the face and voice of an angel.
Smitten, Verso then seeks him out and the two begin to build and form a friendship, that later evolves into something much more meaningful.
With the weight of his parents' domaint hold on their only son, wishing for him to remain at home and embrace his Painter's talent, the young man craves more than anything to escape this life that he does not want.
But leaving everything he has ever known behind is a painful and terrifying prospect.
So, in order to start the next chapter in his life and persue his dream in music...Verso makes a choice that changes everything.
A story about family, self sacrifice and love.

Summary
Seeing him is like living again in ignorance. A time before his world became Fractured – both metaphoric and literal. Seeing him is remembering there was once a time when he thought he could be happy, where he could be happier than anyone else. Seeing him is like the clouds of his life blowing away – like everything he learned 60 years ago was a lie and he can go back to those days where nothing mattered except the sound of keys composing a new melody combined with the sounds of pencil scratching across a journal.
Seeing him is impossible, Verso thinks, because his Gustave died 60 years ago – left to a heartbreaking fate because Verso could not tell him the tragic truth of their world.
Or: Before the Fracture, Verso Dessendre and Gustave were inevitable. When their world split apart, Verso believed Gustave to have died in the aftermath. Why, then, is Gustave alive in Lumière far after his date of Gommage?
