ADA Rafael Barba is new to Manhattan SVU and he wants to make a good impression on the close knit squad. He finds a particular connection with Detective Olivia Benson and six months down the line, when an unsolved case becomes a hunt for a serial rapist and murderer, they find themselves leaning on each other more than they had expected.
Set roughly around the time of season 13/14 but Elliot never left and Lewis never happened.

'Rafael lifts his arm to rest on the back of the sofa, angling his body towards Olivia, his hand coming to rest next to her shoulder. She turns her body slightly to face him, pulling one leg up onto the couch and tucking her foot underneath her, leaning her head down to rest on his hand. She can see Rafael studying her face, like he’s trying to decipher her thoughts. She hates when he does that. He has an uncanny knack of knowing when she is hiding something of significance or when something is bothering her but she’s not sure how to talk about it.
“That’s not it though, is it?” he says, probing her gently into giving up what’s really on her mind.
She sighs, lifting her head up off of his hand so that she doesn't have to look at him. Damn him for reading her so well.'

“We’ve been asked to assist on a case that Intelligence caught this morning.”
Hailey’s mind freezes for a second, but she tries to maintain her composure and not make it look too obvious. Intelligence… Jay. This is not how she thought today was going to go.
“Seems like a strange request. We don’t usually work any cases with Intelligence,” She states. She’s trying her best to sound indifferent, but her mind is running a mile a minute trying to figure out how this might work.
“Yeah, unfortunately this has come from the higher ups. They've asked me to send over two officers to the 21st district this morning to work alongside them in this case. High profile too.”
Hailey takes another sip of her coffee to give her some time to organise her thoughts. Two officers, he said. It didn't have to mean her.
