Summary
Sora and Riku transcended space and time to be together. How was it that their stupid day jobs found a way to tear them apart?
A year into being "Interplanetary Ambassador of Foreign Affairs," Sora realizes he and Riku have come to a standstill in their long-distance relationship. Their anniversary is looming and Sora has to be in two places at once, the Yule Ball for work and The Land of Departure for Riku.
Enter Roxas.-
“You’re going to...switch places?” Kairi asked carefully, eyes squinted at Sora and Roxas. Sora’s clipboard was still clutched tightly to her chest, pen limp between her fingers.
“Yes,” Sora said. “So that I can be with Riku today and tomorrow.”
Kairi blinked slowly. “And how are you going to pull this off?”
“Magic,” Roxas deadpanned. Sora pointed at Roxas excitedly to support the answer.
Kairi brought a hand to her forehead and closed her eyes. “Lord help us all.”

They serve as a companion, meant to help with menial tasks and manage your daily life in general. Most people say that the appeal of StarLights was their ability to be personalized. You could have someone cold-hearted and mean, or someone who always smiled. Some weirdos like to program them to be much younger than them and talk all cutesy. Kairi had her own, that she had programmed to be a “bad boy” of sorts. She called him Vanitas, the name of her crush. It was very weird, but Riku wasn’t one to judge.

Riku is an Earthshaker, part of a biker brotherhood forged in the dusty byways of Destiny, to protect each other when nobody else...
Well, it's actually much less impressive than that. He grew up with too much money and not enough people and the biker gang seemed mysterious and adventurous, so why not try his luck?
Life with the Earthshakers is hardly exciting, but Riku makes a friend for the first time in 18 years. Axel is chummy, charming, and chaotic in equal, fiery measure, and he turns Riku's stomach as much as lightens his spirits. Take, for example, a spontaneous road-race against two mysterious strangers just in from the great Who Knows Where? Axel eggs Riku on in the spirit of competition, but when the race totals the bike of the smiley, be-necklaced stranger, Sora and his brother are promptly stranded in Destiny, and Riku responsible for them both, to everyone's frustration.
Still...there are worse spots for a detour. And Riku has been starving for company.

Sora feels like home.
“I missed you,” Riku croaks, like it explains everything.
Sora forgets the intimacy he had with Riku in Quadratum. Now, he doesn't understand why things are so awkward between them. Riku knows he shouldn't push it, but he's only human. Right?
