As Jon grows up he starts treating his loneliness as a friend. It is a constant companion, one that doesn't judge him and lets him just be. He is used to being alone.
The only being that has accompanied him is the fog. It has been there when he was a child and when he encountered Mr. Spider. It is no wonder he chooses it when he gets older.
