Summary
Reki’s only known Langa for a few months, but it feels like he’s known him forever. It comes with the territory of spending almost all of their waking hours together. Less than a year of friendship and there are already countless undeniable, unspoken truths between them. Like the way Reki can see what Langa needs and find a solution without him having to ask. Or the fact that Langa would put himself in harm’s way to protect Reki, over and over again, without hesitation.
But the grin on Langa’s face falters a bit at the challenge, his eyes soften with a tinge of something Reki can’t place, and his face goes completely pink. That’s confusing. Reki tries and fails to shove away the feeling of his stomach prickling at the sight of it.

Reki is in denial. Langa is oblivious. They're both pining harder than either of them can imagine.

“Did you know penguins mate for life?” Langa blurts out. “And during courtship, males present females with the smoothest pebble they can find. Because they build their nest out of rocks.”
For a moment, there’s no response, just the wind in Langa’s ears and Reki blinking at him, and Langa seriously considers throwing himself over the ship. And then Reki breaks out into a huge grin, all teeth, and Langa breathes a sigh of relief.
“Awww, really?” Reki asks brightly, his hair flopping in his face. He pushes it back with a bandaged hand. “That’s so cute. Hey, wait a second, why do penguins have a better love life than me?”
