As Kyojuro inches forward, the person suddenly throws an arm up, whimpering low in their throat, as if to protect their face—as if they’re expecting a blow of some kind—and that’s when Kyojuro sees them: three thick bands of bluish-black ink encircling the person’s forearms, the pigment rich as painted silk.
A slave tattoo.
Kyojuro recoils, his shock a rush of ice in his veins. He’s seen such marks on men and women before, of course, but rarely has he ever seen them on someone so far from the capital, where such atrocities are common.
“…Oh,” Kyojuro breathes, leaning back on his heels.
It’s soft—no louder than a sigh—but the person withdraws as if he’s shouted, shivering violently. Their eyes are huge, darting wildly in the gaunt, shadowed planes of their face, but curiously enough, there’s no fear there, only a kind of grim resignation that’s somehow worse.

Kyojuro finds a man who calls himself Akaza one day, on a cold and lonely road.
Little does he know that this chance meeting will change both of their lives, and the lives of everyone around them.

Kyoujurou finally looks up.
The face that stares back at him is a stranger's. Akaza is wearing an expression he doesn’t think he’s ever seen on him before—tense and haggard and undisputably, unnervingly human. His fingers are buried in the blanket, twisting it, and the fabric is ripping under his nails unnoticed. He's almost straining his neck to reach Kyoujurou. Sitting up, looking at him—nervously. The meaning of his strange statement just now is lost on him.
Is he trying to apologize? Very well, then. Kyoujurou sets his jaw and doesn’t say anything for long, long seconds.
