“A list of gentlemen?” Lady Danbury's voice climbs an octave
“Of requirements. For a husband, that is”.
“And what, pray, are the 'requirements' you seek in this hypothetical husband?”
Kate looks at the notebook in her hands.
“Tolerable. Dutiful. Decent manners. Steady enough income to support a small household. No gambling debts or illegitimate children. Not a brute in private. And ideally,” she says, lifting her eyes to meet Lady Danbury’s, “he must have the ability to hold a conversation without being a complete bore”. She finishes. At Lady Danbury’s silence, Kate shifts once more in her seat. Then adds: “That last part is not so much a requirement, but a preference.”

The guy grins and walks up to Henry. He sticks his hand in Henry’s face for a fist bump and says, “Hey bro, it’s Vincent. We went on a date here the other week.”
“Err—right,” Henry says, looking awkward. “Can I help you with something, Vincent?”
“I’m here to shoot my shot again,” Vincent says confidently. “I just feel like we really could’ve connected if—”
Which is when Alex slides his chair over, slings an arm around the back of Henry’s seat and says, “Sorry, bro, but he’s already taken.”

In which the hot guy at the coffee shop keeps bringing all his first dates there when Alex is just trying to study. His name, not that Alex is eavesdropping (much), is Henry. Henry likes dogs and his tea with a splash of Jane Eyre and honestly Alex would make a way better first date for him than all those other guys combined. When one of Henry’s old dates shows up uninvited, Alex is only too happy to prove his point.

The man straightened a little, like he was preparing for a performance. “Security,” he said with a nod.
Henry raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t know the Conellis had hired security.”
“Should they have told you?” the man asked, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
Henry blinked, caught a bit off guard. “Well... not necessarily. I just... I own the bookstore.” He pointed toward Fox & Pages. “Right there.”
Recognition dawned in the man’s expression. “That’s your store? With the cute string lights in the window? That place looks incredibly cozy. Like, dangerously easy to spend hours in.”
Henry chuckled, surprised by the genuine enthusiasm. “That’s the idea.”
The man laughed—a rich, warm sound that made Henry’s skin tingle.
“I’ll have to stop by sometime,” he said. “Who should I ask for?”
“Henry,” he replied. “And you are...?”
“Alex.”or Henry owns a bookstore and just happens to meet Alex in front of future crime scenes

5 times Alex manages meeting with men from Henry's Oxford past and 1 time Henry returns the favor.
The next time Alex glances around to check on Henry, the woman is gone, but the man is still there, leaning a little too far into Henry’s space and Henry’s lip has developed that tight spot in the corner. Politely excusing himself, Alex glides across the floor, deftly avoiding any entanglements that could delay him. Sliding up next to Henry, he places his hand on the small of Henry’s back, and can feel the tension there, confirming that they don’t like this person. “Hi, I’m Alex. And you are?” reaching out his other arm to shake the stranger’s hand. Shake hands, smile pretty, make everyone watching believe they are making inane small talk.
