Summary
Long ago, humans and merfolk lived alongside each other peacefully, until distrust and greed lead to the humans betraying and abusing the merfolk, prompting a war that ended in devastation on both sides. King Alfor and the Galra King created a peace treaty with one condition: Humans and mermaids are NOT to interact with each other again.
Lance has always been fascinated by humans and their customs, always collecting what he finds in shipwrecks and going to the surface to people-watch the humans that sail on ships. For years, he has watched one human in particular: the human prince called Keith. Despite the warnings of his family, he can't help his curiosity, his burning desire and longing to know and be a part of the human world. When the opportunity arises, will he regret taking the chance and the challenge the sea witch presented him? Or can he manage to capture the heart of the human prince who unknowingly captured his long ago?

According to Lance, he has a great life. A large family full of younger kids running around a cozy house, a stern father and a strong, loving mother, a large dog full of love for his owners, lots of space to run around and grow in the backyard. Only light and happiness, no tragedy to speak of. But this is far from the truth.
They’ll never know. If he has anything to say about it, no one will ever know the real truth.

"I know, I know," Lance said as he bustled around his nearly bare bedroom, tossing shirts out of drawers and pictures off of walls into his open suitcase on his bed. "I totally procrastinated till the last minute, just like you said! I don't need to hear the 'I told you so,' a little help packing would be nice!"
"Lance-"
"I bet you're already packed," he went on, oblivious to his best friend anxiously shifting in his doorway in frustration and anxiety. "Man, I can't wait until we get there-"
"Lance! I have something to tell you!"
Lance blinked, stilling his movements. He'd never seen his best friend so... guilty and anxious before. His brows pulled together in concern. "What's up, buddy?"
"I'm not going to the Garrison with you."

“Nothing.” Thanatos’s mouth quirks up in amusement. “You were just staring at me very intensely.”
Here’s where Zagreus would normally follow up with something flirtatious. Just admiring the view. He imagines the way Than would roll his eyes, and he smiles fondly at the thought. But ... something stops him from saying such a thing.
Instead, he’s gripped with an overwhelming desire to say something much more serious.
or, Zagreus says “I love you” to Thanatos for the first time.

“Jesus fucking Christ,” the man cursed, voice low enough that only Lance could hear him because of the soft murmuring and shuffling of the other customers in the shop. He rolled his eyes as he stalked up to the counter. “It’s Keith. Like I’ve told you a thousand fucking times.”
