(...) „Wilhelm, you are being reckless.” The queen spoke, quietly watching Wilhelm ignoring her words, completely. „Wilhelm.” She tried again.
„You can say whatever you want, it’s settled, I am not changing my plans.” The prince spoke, walking around the room in a hurried manner, knowing he is supposed to pick Simon up in about 20 minutes. Indeed his timing wasn’t really good, it never was, telling Simon to pack up for three days right after dinner at Forest Ridge, telling him he will pick him up with Malin in about an hour. He heard a faint, quiet sigh from the doorframe before heels clacked against the wooden floor, closer and closer to him.
„I am not trying to talk you out of it. If your father approved, be it. I just want you to be responsible and aware of your actions outside. Just because you are not in the city doesn’t mean there won’t be eyes on you and Simon everywhere you go.” (...)Also, Wilhelm thinks of Simon as his little starlight.

Summary
He was leaving for university in less than a week. His room was all packed up, eighteen years of his life reduced to five small boxes. Wille had chosen to defer for a year, to give him time to settle into his Crown Prince role without the added stress. Simon supported his decision completely, but it was the first time they would really be away from each other. Even when they were broken up, he still saw Wille at school. Now he would be spending most of his time at the palace, and Simon would be literally miles away from him. Any time they were going to spend together would need to be planned, coordinated. No more sneaking off to Wille’s dorm in the middle of the afternoon, or making out on the couch when his mom was working late. That’s what this weekend was about. A last chance to hang out and relax and make love before everything had to change.

So, of course, he didn’t know the unspoken rule — that Simon Eriksson is not to be messed with. He’s not to be spoken to, looked at, breathed on. Summary
Running from his mother and her unattainable expectations, Wilhelm finds solace at his brother’s house in Bjärstad. It was there he found a sense of belonging, a sense of hope, that, maybe one day, he too could be brave like Erik and leave his tumultuous household.
It only took one night for the boy next door to catch his eye. The boy who lived in the house where screaming and fighting seemed to be a constant, who shooed away help like his life depended on it but seemed to crave it so deeply in his soft brown eyes.
“I just wanna be friends with you. Everyone needs a friend.”
"Bullshit.”
Because since the first night they met, Simon saw the way Wilhelm looked at him. It was the way this whole fucking town looked at him but worse. Like he was broken, weak, someone who needed to be saved by the cute, privileged boy next door even though he’d been protecting his family for as long as he could remember - even the one who was destroying them.
"Why do you say that?”
“Because I see the way you look at me, Wille."
Because I think I might look at you the same way and I don’t just wanna be friends with you, either.

Summary
Simon Eriksson had always been a troubled boy. And not in the cheesy, cliche ‘bad boy’ way, like he was parading around town with a motorcycle and worn leather jacket. In the 'he has absolutely no regard for himself or others’ type of way. In the 'he doesn't care if he hurts himself or others' type of way.
Wilhelm Bernadotte had always been the good boy and, quite literally, in the cheesy, cliche way: sweater vests and straight A's and in the front row at the church where his dad preached at every Sunday.
The two boys couldn't have been more different- they weren't supposed to talk, to form a friendship.
They weren't supposed to fall in love because Wilhelm was already fine with living his life the way he wanted until he died and Simon was fine with destroying his.
But they did anyway. They fell in love even with the little time they had left together.

Summary
Wilhelm is unextraordinary, at least in his own mind. All he cares for is his older brother Erik, baking, and the owner of the bakery, Flora. He's a romantic, and not in the way most people defined themselves. Rather he finds himself inventing the stories of the people who come through the bakery. He likes seeing the happiness in each and every person. He is obsessed with love, and he has a love for each of the people in his life (which aren't many).
Simon is the opposite, a quiet person who seems to dislike everyone. He's disconnected from every person he interacts with, even his friends. He is chasing a connection he's unsure exists. He doesn't believe a person could ever know him fully, he's changing too often and too closed off. He keeps secrets from each person he was close to. There is always a small part of him that he keeps just for himself with each of them.
The two work opposite of each other, Wille in Flora's, a bakery he adored. Simon in a bookstore where the owner rarely shows up let alone knows what happens in the store, just across the street. When Flora decides to bring some bread to Simon at the end of his last shift before the holidays, it makes the two come together for the first time.
