Alvida always hated Koby’s soulmark. She said that Koby’s soulmate was a foul, and that she’d kill them one day. Usually, after that, she used one of the claw-like acrylic nail Koby spent so much time on, to lift his chin and whispered that if Koby tried to betray her for them, she’d kill him too.

Koby never would have thought that he'd meet his soulmate on the sea. Honestly, he was convinced that Alvida kidnapping him had altered his destiny enough that he was doomed to never meet them at all. And yet, a cute boy jumping out of a barrel turned out to be just what he'd been waiting for.

Koby doesn’t, but the pirate certainly seems to think otherwise. As intimidated as he still feels, Koby forces himself not to look away, taking the stranger in. It’s as though he’s looking at the shadow of someone he almost recognizes—
Koby’s jaw drops. “Luffy?!”

“You took this world by storm, with all the confidence of the king you’re aiming to be! But me? I’ve spent the last two years fighting tooth and nail, day in and day out, to prove that I can stand on my own! That I’m strong enough to protect those that can’t protect themselves!”
Koby pretends he doesn’t see the way the corners of Luffy lips turn up into a proud, satisfied smile. He shakes his head and looks away, tears stinging at the corners of his eyes.
“But it’s still not good enough!”
Luffy’s smile drops so quickly Koby wonders if he’d just imagined seeing it.
“Then what the hell is ‘good enough’, Koby?”
“I… what?”
Luffy charges forward and grabs Koby by the front of his shirt, ignoring how the fabric nearly shreds with how hard he’s gripping it. He yanks him forward so he’s right in Koby’s face, eyes boring into his with a fury Koby never thought would be directed at him. He sucks in a breath as he realizes just how close they are, practically nose to nose.
“What. The hell. Is good. Enough.” Luffy repeats through gritted teeth.
