His fourth win. A four time world champion.
But none of it was enough to evoke anything else in Max. His body had reacted, aching and crying out in pain after the gruelling race, but that was all.
He didn’t feel happy, he didn’t feel overjoyed that he was living the dream he’d always wished for. Instead, he just felt numb to it all.He’d always felt like he was a semi permanent husband, only ever there when things were going good. The lavish holidays away, Christmas, the fun and exciting things. He was never there when Charles had a bad day at work and wanted to vent, or when one of the cats were unwell and needed treatment, it all fell to Charles to handle alone.

The first time Max had placed his eyes on Charles, he had saved his life.He was the head of the Dutch mafia, he was supposed to be devoted, from the second he was born his destiny had been pre determined. He was to replace his father when the time came and then the cruel tradition would continue to cascade downwards, Verstappen after Verstappen leading the never ending fight.
But he wasn’t sure if many high ranking mafia bosses had husbands at home mind.

He didn’t feel guilty when he took three extra left turns on the way home to extend his drive. He didn’t feel guilty when he sat in the car with a coffee after getting what he needed from the shop instead of rushing home.
