In 1337, King Robert III of England issued the Writs of Summons, granting peerages to his subjects to foster loyalty as England prepared for war against France. Three years later, in 1340, he further solidified his sons' positions by granting them dukedoms: John became Duke of Cornwall, Thomas of Exeter, and Henry of Somerset.
After years of conflict, Robert III sought peace, but following the death of his wife, Queen Phillipa of Brittany, he controversially married his mistress, Euphemia Mortimer. Defying opposition, he obtained a papal decree to legitimize their children, bestowing the dukedoms of Clarence and Kent upon his illegitimate sons, Edmund and Arthur, and founding the new House Bridgerton.
This act planted the seeds for the bloodiest civil war England would ever witness.
