Summary
Five years after the Battle of Hogwarts, the wizarding world is what you might call “a godsdamned mess.” The population is dwindling, the economy is suffering, and Hermione Granger has decided to pursue an arranged marriage—but only so she can be nominated to the antiquated Wizengamot, of course. After all, the Wizengamot is ignoring the world’s problems, and Hermione is determined to fix them. Granted, she never expected to be matched with Draco sodding Malfoy—the newest DMLE consultant who wears his Azkaban tattoos as proudly as his childhood sneer. But admittedly, between the turbulence of her farcical relationship, corrupt politicians, and a serial killer on the loose, nothing in Hermione’s life is going according to plan. “I don’t believe lockdown is warranted,” Kingsley continued, “but, Hermione, you’ll be under the protective watch of Mr. Malfoy and Mr. Nott, ‘round the clock. With the severity of this attack, we’re following protocol down to the smallest detail: you’ll be placed in a safe residence, and one of them will remain with you at all times, whether it be an errand, social call, or working on any floor in the Department of Mysteries.
Memories, too many memories, with Draco and Theo flooded her as the depths of this assignment sunk in, as the reality and proximity sunk in, only dragging her further beneath the surface. She was suffocating underneath it all: everything she had once shared with her dearest friends, every feeling she never should have felt for said friends, every reason she had left them- and nearly everyone else in her life- behind when she moved away from England two years ago.
“Hermione?” Kingsley insisted, eyeing her. “Will that be a problem?”
“No.”
