Groaning, he tried again, he was just about to bellow out a call for ‘SIGHTING!’ when a head popped out of the water, cloaked in liquid gold and crimson. Akaza had sworn there was fire sitting on the water for a moment, then he realized it was hair, someone's head.
The pieces fell together and Akaza’s breath left him in a woosh.
It was a mermaid.
They were real, and it was bobbing in the water just sixty or so feet below him.

Summary
Akaza, one of the top staff at an aquarium with a rehabilitation center finds himself in quite the pickle when a siren comes into the facility. One he shouldn't have feelings for, but yet does. What path does he take to handle these stirred emotions.
This is an AU (Alternate universe), I am deciding the characters are not going to conform around the traditional hashira/demon groups. In other words, Akaza will be interacting with characters that are demon slayers in the manga even though he himself is a demon in the manga. In this story he is human and interacts with other humans from the manga. Kyojuro is not human and his interactions with other merfolk may or may not be demon or human characters from the manga. That’s why it’s an AU, the hierarchy and relationships are entirely different.

The demon pulled away and, after a moment, finally rose to its feet. Kyojuro watched as it returned to the open door and then stopped, turning back to meet his gaze.
“Don’t die, Kyojuro.”
What right did it have to say that to him? Kyojuro might have laughed, but something about the way it said those words sucked any malice from his thoughts.
It wasn’t an order, but it wasn’t a request either.
“If I live, Demon, it will not be for you.”
Upper Moon Three nodded and left.

Kyojuro’s life is plagued by Death. It hovers over his shoulder, watches his every move, and patiently waits for the day it will take him by the hand and lead him to the next life.
Upper Moon Three thinks it can ward away Death with three words. It’s naive. Unrealistic. A promise that cannot be kept. And yet the demon continues to return, and Kyojuro is still alive.
The least he can do is try to keep it that way.

Stuck in a time loop that resets every time with Kyojuro's death, Akaza finds himself learning of the terrifying frailty of human mortality.
He just doesn't want to have to hold Kyojuro's bleeding, broken body anymore.

He wanted this man, he wanted to fight this man, to own this man. No. The man was strong, but he needed more time. More time before Rengoku was ready for him. While he held his own beautifully against the Lower Moon, Akaza wanted to ensure the man could hold his own against him. The opportunity would come to those who were patient, and Akaza was a very patient man.
(I have the desire to write Akaza eventually coming over to the Demon Slayer side and getting a redemption at happiness.)

He liked to talk a lot, the demon. Always trying to get a reaction out of him, and Kyojuro was powerless to shut him up. He didn’t understand why Akaza liked him so much, it didn’t make any sense. He’d lost, hadn’t he? But Akaza didn’t seem to care. He just rambled on and on about whatever it was that he had in his mind.
Kyojuro never answered him, stuck to his bed like a prisoner.
Aren’t you tired of this broken body of yours?

The hand had returned and this time Yuuji managed to gasp and close his mouth holding on to the air for life. This time there were hands, okay two hands normal right? The hands turned him around and he was face to face with a man that wasn't his father. A series of clicks and trills came from the man. But those were orca sounds, how was this stranger making those noises- oh.
That's when Yuuji looked down from where the man was holding him at arm's length, staring at him like he was the odd one. The man had an orca tail where his legs should be and it looked HUGE, his pectoral fins swayed slightly at his man's torso- four arms?
"WOAH! COOL!!" unable to hold in his excitement from his own body and safety, he screamed underwater. This noise made the orca man growl before releasing hold of the boy as he swam away.

As the new high school counselor, Aether has been received quite well so far. Sure, his students may have grown too comfortable and like to tease by calling him 'ma'am' instead of 'sir' or flicking at his braid. But other than that, he feels like he has truly found his place.
So, Aether cannot fathom why or who on earth would suddenly begin a series of vandalized attacks against his home. And he is starting to suspect that the neighborhood delinquent may have something to do with it.
After all, this is the same delinquent who happens to have a habit of watching him from around the corner or suddenly pinning him against walls.

When the time comes for them to choose a sacrifice for each of the guardian 'demons' who watch over the land, sending the two of them off seems like a simple choice to the villagers. Aether isn't too thrilled about being thrown away by the people who were supposed to be like a family to him but when he meets the 'demon' he was sacrificed to, he comes to learn that the humans he grew up with were the least human of all.
