Once, she came across a Japanese saying, "koi no yokan," which doesn't mean love at first sight, but rather the sense one has upon meeting someone that love will inevitably bloom. Maybe not right away, but inevitably. She remembered seeing him enter the cafeteria with his family—marble statues, cold both on the outside and inside, with the finest details etched into their snowy white skin. They could have belonged in a museum next to Michelangelo's sculptures, near a young David poised for battle, or a Virgin Mary cradling Jesus in her lap, their garments finely and realistically folded. They looked unreal yet blended with their surroundings just enough not to arouse suspicion. Isabella turned away.

"I'm not sure whether to be relieved that I was right or terrified that I was right." She's not lying either. She's a bit of both right now.
"Terrified would be the commonly expected reaction," I say softly. Her face is rigid, she's obviously distressed, confused, overwhelmed. I want to help her, to use my gift to calm her, but equally I want her honesty in this moment. If I have any chance at all at honesty with her, she has to be able to process this at her pace.
"I was sort of hoping I had some kind of injury from banging my head so hard," she tells me, her tone and emotional state bitter and slightly wild. "I don't suppose there's any chance this is a hallucination?"
