“Max,” he enunciated, planting a hand over his chest with a thump, “Max.”
The next line of surprised nonsense had something that could be interpreted as ‘mack-suh’ tacked on to the end, but the man had mirrored the gesture.
“No! I’m Max,” he reached out and grabbed the man’s hand this time, pressing it against his chest, “My name is Max, you dumb fuck.”
The man stared at his hand, then at Max, and eventually a single syllable fell out of his mouth: “Max.”
Holy shit.

Summary
David has always been good with kids. Between his job at the after-school daycare and his longtime attachment to Camp Campbell, it’s no surprise that he’s stretched thin, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world. Gwen reminds him constantly that he needs to slow down, but David can’t ignore kids who need help—especially when one of them turns out to be Max.
It won’t be easy, and it won’t be quick, but David refuses to give up. Because Max deserves more than what he’s had. He deserves a family.
And maybe, just maybe, David and Gwen can be that family.
