Summary
Hunter snapped back around, his cloak flying behind him. The beast hadn’t died. Instead, it reared back onto its hind legs and rolled its lips to expose a pair of blue eyes nestled high in its gums. It returned to all four legs with a loud CRUNCH in the snow, foam dripping from the corners of its maw as another low growl rumbled out.
The beast charged forward faster than Hunter could blink, and without his mind’s direction, he teleported in front of Lilith and pushed her out of the way.
Four white-hot daggers dug into his shoulder blade and ripped through his armor down to the base of his spine. His nerves lit on fire. A loud scream rang in Hunter’s ears, and a small part of him knew it was his voice.
His back was in ribbons, it had to be.
An accident on the Knee leaves the new Golden Guard hanging to life by a thread. After an unpleasant experience in the castle’s infirmary, he is summoned by Belos and taught a painful lesson for putting his life in jeopardy for a witch.

Summary
“Remove your mask, Captain, I wish to see the face of my dear nephew.”
Hunter wordlessly obeyed, reaching to the sides of his silver mask and peeling it off. His ash-blond bangs cascaded over his eyes as he pulled back his hood and lifted his head, moving his face to meet the blank expression of the Emperor’s horned mask.
The Emperor wordlessly looked down at him, and Hunter sensed that he was being appraised. He forced down the nervous knot in his stomach and dryly swallowed, trying not to squirm under the weight of the Emperor’s hidden gaze.
Belos hummed.
The boy was pale, which was unsurprising. He’d heard that the newest captain in his Coven rarely took off his mask and that not even the Coven Scouts in his own company knew what he looked like. A rumor circulated claiming that the mysterious witch didn’t even have a face at all.
He flicked a long, blond forelock out of Hunter’s eyes.
“My, my… How much you’ve grown.”
At long last, Hunter returns to the Emperor’s Castle to be ordained as the next Golden Guard.

Summary
Hunter relaxed his shoulders ever so slightly after Belos released his chin, though his ears still pointed downward— it was a tell he hadn’t quite mastered the art of hiding yet, and his uncle picked up on it immediately.
“What’s bothering you?” Belos asked.
Hunter’s face twisted into a hesitant expression as he tightly gripped at the ends of his shirt, nearly piercing his nails through the fabric and into his palms. Then, wisely knowing better than to keep his uncle waiting, he opened his mouth and tried to work up the courage to ask the question on his mind.
“Why… Why do you keep me around?"
Summer meant staying at the Imperial residence in Latissa, but what was once a summertime retreat for Hunter melted into a reminder of his uselessness. And while ditching the day's lessons may not have been the wisest choice, it was the one Hunter made.

Summary
No, not paint, Hunter realized, It’s blood. Dried, silver blood
He parted the grass to either side of him, revealing a bloody snare trap and a collection of sporadic tracks stamped hastily into the ground.
“The creature that we’re looking for…” Hunter began, turning to look at his uncle, “It escaped a snare?”
Belos’ mask warped the light from the brightening sky as it steadily nodded up and down.
“It did.”
“What kind of beast is it?”
At that, Belos hummed out a laugh and placed a gold-plated hand on the crown of Hunter’s head.
“Do you truly expect me to ruin the surprise?”
Belos takes a young Hunter on his very first hunting trip.

Summary
The Collector jumped into the air, floating just above the stone table, and cackled wildly at what they saw.
“Stolen lungs and stolen bones,
Wood and scales and heart of stone.
Made by you who hates the wild,
Here he lies, this little child!”The time had come to create a new grimwalker, and though each predecessor had always formed into a young adult, the newest creation sleeping on the stone slab looked to be a mere child.
