Summary
When she got back to the apartment, it was nearing mid-afternoon. It would be just enough time to have everything ready by the time Ava’s shift ended at six.
Except, when Beatrice turned the key in the lock, she knew immediately that the apartment was not empty. An unfamiliar sound was coming from their bedroom.
Beatrice set the grocery bags down, managing to avoid anything more than the softest crinkle of brown paper as they hit the countertop. The floorboards, normally old and creaky, were silent beneath her feet. She reached for the knife on her back, fingers wrapping around the handle as she got to the door, open just enough for Beatrice to peak inside and –
Beatrice stopped breathing at the sight before her.

Summary
“You need to shower,” Beatrice said, touching the back of Ava’s neck with a gentle hand.
Her bones still ached with every movement, her skull still throbbing with a splitting pain. One of her ribs was currently rebuilding itself, smashed to pieces in the fall, and the process was uncomfortable at best, agonizing at worst. Since Ava had gotten the halo, she had been stabbed, been beaten, been broken–but never quite like this. Nothing compared to this.
Ava groaned as she stood, and Beatrice was quick in getting to her side. Her eyes were still wide, the terror in them just as fresh as it was hours ago, when Ava had died. She still couldn’t fully wrap her head around the fact that she had died, again. She couldn’t imagine what it was like, what she would have felt if she was the one to hold Beatrice’s broken body, felt her lungs not breathing, her heart not beating. She wouldn’t be able to leave her side, much like Beatrice couldn’t seem to now.
“Can you help me?” Ava asked, for Beatrice’s sake as much as her own. “I’m not sure I can do it on my own right now.”

After the injury of falling 13 floors onto solid concrete, Ava needs a bath and a friend by her side. Beatrice is happy to assist with both of those tasks.

Ava tries and fails to reach the clip of her bra behind her back, her stupid elbow joints were still in pain.

“Of course,” Her hands were cold as they lifted up her skin and unclasped the bra without a sign of struggle at all. It was hot, and kind of funny considering the reason behind why she was a nun in the first place. “If you make a comment about how easily I unclasped it you’ll be left alone in this tub to prune for the rest of the evening”

The issue was, well, she had quite a few issues around sleeping. That’s probably not all that surprising given…everything…but lately, since the whole thing with the being murdered and then the nuns repeatedly trying to kill her again and the tomb and Adriel and the battle and all of that, Ava has really not been able to sleep well.
She can sleep, yes, and obviously has to when she gets too exhausted that not even the Halo can keep her moving. But when she does it is not pretty. She’s been decently good at hiding all of this so far. Even on the road while they were trying to get here, she’d been good at hiding it. She can fake sleep well and has gotten pretty good at timing little naps when she has the space to be fully alone. Even if that was only 30 minutes at a time while Beatrice ran out of their motel rooms to get them supplies, it would at least keep her afloat.
But now there might never be any time to be alone. Beatrice had just sworn not to leave Ava alone in sleep and she would be sharing with Beatrice for the foreseeable future.

There’s a doubtful expression in Beatrice’s eyes, but it's true. Nothing compares to the Hell-on-Earth she endured for years in a sickbed with only the hateful, bitter touch of Sister Frances for comfort.
Here she has someone who cares about her, someone who protects her, tends to her, and mends her when she breaks. Beatrice’s hands are rapture where Sister’s were an affliction to endure. Beatrice’s hands are holy, and when they hold her, caress her, touch her, she feels cared for. Cherished. Loved.
