    Summary

Ciri wakes to a sob caught in her throat and a palm settled over her forehead.

“Shh, darling,” someone murmurs to her, and it takes her a disconcertingly long amount of time to realize that it’s Jaskier. He’s kneeling beside her bed, stroking her hair back with a gentle hand, soothing her like it’s something he has practice at.

“I—I don’t— what—” she gets out, but she’s still weeping like a child (she doesn’t even know why) and her voice comes out so choked and blubbering that it’s a credit to Jaskier’s patience that he even wastes time listening to her at all.

He just sits there quietly, waiting as she struggles to get the words out until, finally, she gives up entirely. “Jaskier,” she chokes out instead, desperately confused and miserable and feeling so thoroughly awful, as if the simple sound of his name can convey everything she’s feeling and ask every question she can’t quite manage to say all at once and somehow make him understand it.

He hums like, somehow, it can. “You’ve been ill,” he says, his voice soft.

    Summary

Look, Jaskier's got a lot going on. He's painfully aware that there are cataclysmic events happening and that the troubled teenager he knows might save the world or speed along the end of days. He's also in love with a man who's never even admitted that they're friends, which is almost as bad.

Oh, and he's still working as the Sandpiper, only now a terrifying eldritch creature has entrusted him with the Song of the Seven to give hope to the elves and help them fight back against their oppression. It's probably the bravest thing he's ever done, but not everyone sees it that way.

Luckily he knows some people who excel at last minute rescues.

... then he just has to figure out how to tell Geralt why so many people are trying to kill him. This is going to go great.

    Summary

There was something ugly churning in Geralt's gut watching all those nobles flock around Jaskier. Fawning, complimenting, flirting.

Jaskier should be thriving and preening from all the attention. Instead there was something uncomfortable and pinched in his expression, skillfully masked behind playful smiles and bright laughs.

Geralt didn't want to contemplate why he, and only he, noticed the bard's wish to run.

    Summary

He smells him before he sees him, a waft of cool water and green things, a scent he’d know half-dead after decades of smelling it, no matter the months since he was last around it.

    “I want to hire you.”

There’s a cosmic irony to this somewhere along the line, a second meeting in a pub with him tucked away in a corner drinking alone and the bard sitting across from him with proprietary self-assurance.

The man across from him now, however, isn’t some bright-eyed teenager, more fanciful than sensible and with far too much self-confidence.

This man is older. No less beautiful but with something sharper around his edges. His hair is longer than Geralt’s ever seen it before, and his jacket is a deep red leather cut close to his body instead of a pastel bit of frippery meant to make him seem dainty. There’s an edge to this man now, a sort of hardness to his eyes.

(His breath catches, just for a moment, at the knowledge of his contribution at putting it there).

(post-mountain, geralt thinks he's never going to see jaskier again) (and then he's approached about a contract with the sandpiper)
