"He-" she choked on her words. "Joel-" she whined, throwing herself into the crook of his neck, shivering, crying silently as she took in shaky breaths, the pounding of her heart deafened anything Joel had said.
"Oh, baby girl," he breathed out, closing his eyes and grounding himself with her in his arms. He cradled her head, sheltering her like he should've been all this time. He opened his eyes again and looked down at his watch. His shattered, dusty heart was haphazardly glued together to be held in a place, similar to the glass in the watch. An obvious gaping hole still bore true, but it was supported by the sharp remnants of what used to be a fully working teller of time. He could feel his heart take a full, creaky beat, and his mind was cleared of the cobwebs of inactivity and sheer impulse from the last month. He now had a clear job of making sure Ellie was safe and far away from this burning resort.
