It was not long after that, as he approached the outer walls, that he heard it. Echoing faintly through the near empty courtyard and into the fields beyond the keep, a mournful voice drifted through the air.
“Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen,
yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!
Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier
mi oromardi lisse-miruvóreva
Andúnë pella, Vardo tellumar
nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni
ómaryo airetári-lírinen.”
(Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
long years numberless as the wings of trees!
The years have passed like swift draughts
of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West,
beneath the blue vaults of Varda
wherein the stars tremble in the song of her voice, holy and queenly.)It was unmistakable, though he had heard it so rarely. Indeed, one of the few times he had heard it was when it had been raised in the Goldenwood forest in a keening, haunting lament for Gandalf. When Legolas did sing, it was often in joy or wonder, not so this time. No, since they had begun this quest, laments and dirges had figured more and more into his songs.
