    Summary

The Reverend Father's face contorted with rage. His hand reached into his pocket, to where Gideon knew he would bring out a bone chip and turn it into something worse than knuckles to hurt her. Harrow already had so many scars. Maybe this wouldn't even be a scar, maybe this would just be the thing that finally killed her.

[RD Gideon's preparations for the Lyctor trials take a backseat to keeping Harrow safe.]

“We have known each other for quite some time now,” she sighs, her eyes briefly flicking over to Gideon before returning to her hands. Her eyes feel like a spotlight left on too long, slow roasting whatever lay in their path. “You may have gotten the impression that I can’t stand you, but that is the furthest thing from the truth.”

Gideon snorts. Harrow’s dour expression contorts into a sneer. “Do not flatter yourself. I still find you hardly more of worth than swine, but- you're something. One of the only people I talk to, if I'm being honest. One of the only worth the effort. I look at people, and I see...” Her gaze drifts over to the window. Her voice has taken on a jaded edge, the serrated blade of bitterness.  “Meat. Sacks of organs.

    Summary

The crazy thing is that Harrow doesn’t even like her, the occasional blip at the sacred pool notwithstanding. Gideon dies for her – a stupid ordeal all around, the least said about it the better – and resigns herself to the Underworld, and that’s supposed to be that, right? Harrow isn’t supposed to come after her. Not till she dies herself, and Gideon is hoping that’s a long way off for a lot of reasons. She deserves at least a few decades without Harrow, after what that woman put her through.

But come she does, with her stupid furrowed brows and haughty chin and clomping step. With sculptor’s fingers and artist’s eyes and that same old obnoxious confidence in her own brilliance. Harrow bulldozes her way to to the Underworld and stands before the throne of the God of the Dead, running on the fumes of her own manic determination, and demands Gideon back.

And the Lord of the Underworld, John Gaius himself, says, “Wow. Let me think about that.”

    Summary

“I'm done,” announced Gideon. “Let me out.”

    “Out of what?”

“This!” Gideon waved her hands around to encompass the entire room. “I'm done with this shit! I'm dead and you won't even let me be dead! What's the problem, Nonagesimus? Were you unsatisfied with not having my corpse to play with, so you decide to fuck around with my–with my soul instead?”

A flicker of guilt passed over Harrow's face. She drew her legs up onto the couch, hugging her knees to her chest. Very quietly, she said, “That was not my intention.”

    Summary

It was strange, how far away and blunted all sensations were to her. Most days, Gideon felt exactly like the thing she was: a ghost piloting an expired meat suit. But when Harrow slowly, cautiously bridged the space between them and her hand found Gideon's in the sheets, Gideon could have sworn that she registered the heat of her skin.
