Buck was actually in the Navy SEALS for a year or two, before getting an injury that puts him out of commission and has him discharged, but that injury didn't stop him from joining the 118. Getting a surprise from the appearance of an army Medic who'd saved his ass when he lost his leg, which he now has a prosthetic for. Walk through the doors into the firehouse.

Eddie didn’t want to take his eyes off Buck.
He thought back to earlier that day when Chim had called him to tell him about Buck. He’s developed a dependence to opioids since the crash. He’s been in withdrawal for a couple of days, I think, he’s not doing too good- he needs us. Eddie had felt like he was about to throw up. He’d cried for a couple of minutes and then got everything that he would need for himself and Christopher to stay with Buck for the next few days.

Eddie shakes his head, letting go of the glass and reaching out to tuck the edges of the blanket in around Buck’s hips. Something for him to do. If his hands are busy he doesn’t have to think about how he failed him. He’s here. They both are. That’s what matters.

“Are you okay?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” Maddie replies.
There’s a long pause, neither of them knowing what to say. In the silence, she notices the deep bags under Eddie’s eyes. She sees the slight shake in his hands, the string he’s picking at on his sleeve. Eddie looks back towards the window to Buck’s room.
“He’s breathing, isn’t he?” Eddie says it very quietly. It’s almost a whisper, like he’s even questioning it.
“Yeah,” Maddie breathes out.
“Then I’m good.”

When Eddie wakes up the first thing he notices is the large body laying opposite of him. Buck is on his side facing Eddie. The second thing he notices is the fact his fingers are once again on Buck’s pulse point. Third, Buck looks incredibly adorable when he sleeps. Eddie’s eyes roam over every part of Buck that’s visible. His curls lay across his forehead and Eddie feels an urge to brush them out of the way. Eddie wants nothing more than to move closer to Buck, for his head to find a home in the crook of his neck.
