Buck has always had to work hard to keep two parts of his life separated: his regular, human one from that of the dog he's able to shift into. As a human, he knows that he's in love with his best friend Eddie and that it's never going to happen. A chance encounter in his dog form with a distressed wolf pup might change everything...
The word belongs to his human mind, lost to him while he's in this shape. He searches for it, desperate to call the thing he's leaving behind by its name, but gets distracted by the scent of the earth, warm and wet, full of the forest coming to life in the aftermath of rain.
