Summary
The night was a bastard. Cold, relentless rain slicking the streets of Detroit into a shimmering, broken mirror. Inside the city, the revolution had either just ended or was just beginning—Connor wasn't sure which. I am a machine. I am free.* The final command from Amanda had been to shoot Markus. He hadn't. He’d chosen Hank. He’d chosen himself.
And now he was here.
Standing on Lieutenant Hank Anderson’s porch, motionless in the pouring rain. Water plastered his hair to his forehead and dripped from his chin, but his internal temperature regulators kept him from feeling the chill.
From inside, a frantic scrabbling of claws on wood, then a booming bark. Sumo. The dog shoved his way past Hank’s legs, tail wagging so hard his whole body wriggled. A low, happy whine rumbled in his chest.
Hank watched the interaction, his jaw tight. He looked from his dog, who had instantly accepted this strange machine, to the android himself. He let out a long, shuddering sigh, the sound of a man who had finally run out of fight.
“Jesus, Connor…” Hank’s voice was rough, gravelly from drink and disuse. “You couldn’t have picked a worse night.”
