  Set shortly before the Battle of the Five Armies, the story begins with a game of riddles between a hobbit and a dragon lord. Although Bilbo's victory does not stop Smaug from making towards Dale, the tale is still forever changed. When Bart shoots the dragon, everyone believes he is slain.

  "Duty seems to be all we have left." Margaret's heart ached with a strange pent up longing as she said the words.

  Elizabeth Gaskell's ending feels like it's just the beginning and that is beautiful. However their confession feels so rushed after following their yearning for 500 pages that I took the liberty of inserting a missing scene, just the night before their 'business-meeting'. Thanks Henry Lennox for bringing our handsome, brooding Mr Thornton along. Margaret certainly didn't know where to look.
