Bianca rolled her eyes and grabbed his arm, leading him to the Poe statue. Once they were safely inside, she pressed the leaf into his palm. “I’m willing to bet she didn’t tell you the most interesting thing about breathing lust.”
“Breathing lust?” he echoed.
“The common name,” she clarified. “The most interesting thing about it is that breathing in the pollen only triggers desire if you lock eyes with someone you’re already attracted to.”

Summary
The burial vault was under a tarp nearby, a dark looming shape. Xavier set the cooler down and leaned over the side of the open plot. Wednesday was sitting cross-legged in the center, groups of lit pillar candles in the corners around her.

Summary
Xavier’s knuckles sweep across her cheeks, his palm pressing to her pulse. “Finally,” he murmurs, the word close enough to her mouth to make her melt completely. The umbrella grazes against her leg as it drops to the ground. Xavier pulls her up onto her tiptoes but stays hunched over. Her arms encircle his shoulders.
“Xavier,” she breathes. “I know what you are.”
She feels him go tense.
“Well, that makes it easier.”

Summary
The return to Nevermore for the second semester of sophomore year sees Wednesday trying to covertly solve the matter of her stalker on her own. Prone to her old habits of spying and stake-outs to get answers, Wednesday's first suspect is Xavier - he was the one who gave her the phone after all.
When Wednesday's plans to ransack Xavier's dorm for answers goes awry, she didn't intend to be stuck in the precarious position of hiding under this bed. Wednesday doesn't expect to be exposed to something that enraptures her and propels her obsession forward.

“Get hyped for Valentine’s Day, devoted AlwaysMore readers!” she narrates as she types. “The school play in honor of our committed alumni is going to make you swoon. The stage is being set for Romeo and Juliet! And who will be our Romeo? None other than our tortured artist, Xavier Thorpe!” She ends the sentence with a keystroke flourish. “Word around campus is he was the only candidate considered for the role and our eccentric director of the Nevermore stage poached and recruited him personally. XOXO, GossipGoul at your service, feeding all your 411 cravings.”
Wednesday would like to make a scathing comment about how her roommate’s pseudonym is entirely off brand for a werewolf – and entirely unnecessary as everyone knows who is behind the website - but she’s too busy processing.
Romeo and Juliet is far from her favorite Shakespeare play. (That honor goes to Titus Andronicus, of course.) But the crypt scene is achingly romantic, particularly the part where Juliet stabs herself. Few of the Bard’s heroines subject themselves to such violence in the name of passion. She wonders what practical effects the drama department has access to and imagines the torrent of blood she could rig.

Xavier Thorpe’s eyes have not left her face. The high of the kill is wearing off, but he doesn’t seem fazed, not in the way a normal person would be. The blood staining his face highlights the plane of bone, the shape of his skull perfectly. She wonders what sort of monster she is prepared to open her heart to. “Will you pay me court?” she asks, interrupting his thoughts.
He stares at her. “Miss Addams,” he says at last – because of course he’s guessed who she is – “I would love to.” He smiles at her, the boyish charm in contrast is as jarring as it is swoon-worthy. Disgusting. Wednesday loves it at once.

He shifts his weight, relaxed and incredulous, eyebrows shooting up. It makes his face even more gaunt. A cauldron of bats has taken up residence in the cage of her lungs. “I’m… glad you were getting some action while I was falsely accused.” He shrugs, giving off a nonchalant, yet hostile, impression. The bats hook their thumbs into her ribs. She has actually missed Xavier’s verbal barbs. There is even what she thinks might be an undercurrent of envy, still. The thought makes her dizzy.
“I’m not sure how much time we have,” she repeats, digging though her bag.
Xavier’s brow knits. “What are you doing?”
She extracts her lockpicking kit and unfurls it. “Take a guess.”
