Summary
Penelope Featherington is delivering Lady Whistledown before the start of her third season on the marriage mart in 1815 when her hired hack breaks a wheel.
An eery fog scares away the driver and an oddly dressed Eloise Bridgerton appears. They are then approached by a woman who looks an awful like a younger version of Penelope’s deceased Aunt Petunia.
The woman impressed by Penelope sends the young ladies through a magical whirlpool that will give them the opportunity to live other lives, in other times with other loves. In each alternate time line a modern Eloise learns more about herself and her family. While Penelope navigates the new sexual moors and the possibility of love with someone other than Colin Bridgerton.

Summary
In the summer of 1823 Penelope Featherington spends her holiday with Lady Danbury in Kent, close to the sea, after another disastrous social season. After eleven years on the marriage mart without securing a husband, she is officially a spinster and firmly on the shelf. Bored out of her skull with reporting the same old gossip, she seeks adventure and stumbles upon a smugglers’ hideaway tucked inside a cave. Upon exploring the cave for possible treasure, Penelope, to her dismay, is captured by pirates and taken on board the ship Endeavour, where she is left on the Captain’s bed, bound and gagged.
Colin Bridgerton, known to society as a charming rogue and a devil-may-care-jokester, who travels Europe far and wide, actually captains the ship Endeavour and transports essential goods and documents without asking questions. Setting sail on a time-sensitive voyage to the Netherlands, he is stunned to find Penelope Featherington waiting for him in his cabin. Due to the sensitivity of his assignment, he is stuck with her for the trip.
While Penelope is worrying about her reputation, Colin is trying very hard to avoid scandal and save her, but who is saving who….
