From the pile of discarded files, ART plucked one and trimmed it down for me, just to the salient bits. Even ignoring all of the technical stuff about AI crèches and pair-bonds and artificial empathy development left me with the simple answer "It's complicated." And that complication was about to be tangible, and something I would have to personally deal with.

"If Station Security catches it in the wrong place at the wrong time, or if they get tired of the investigation, or just if SecUnit pisses the wrong person off, they might try to arrest it."
Ratthi snorted. "I mean, they sure wanted to." Gurathin said nothing, and Ratthi's humor dried up. "You're serious. You really think that Station Security would do something like that? Even knowing that SecUnit is innocent?"
