Summary
He is not really afraid, in truth. Perhaps that is selfish in itself – perhaps he yet trusts too deeply in Maedhros’ forgiveness, leans too much on the debt he will always insist Maedhros does not owe him. Often he has wished aloud Thangorodrim did not change them both in the way it did; but he has found it convenient, too, to remember how it has yoked them together. And anger has opened up greater rifts between them, in the past: froze Fingon solid for thirty endless years, only for his grudge to melt in an instant when he learned the truth of what happened at Losgar. It will happen again, he thinks: Maedhros will find him at last and tip back his head in surrender to expose his slender white throat, and rasp out an explanation for Uldor’s treachery while Fingon presses his lips to the point where his pulse hammers hot beneath his skin. And it will not be long after that before he surrenders up his anger, too. He has never been very good at being angry with Maedhros, however hard he tries.

Summary
Too often these days, in Elros’ view, does Elrond’s talk turn towards the power of memory. It makes him uneasy: he does not like to feel the edges of a rift between them, to understand so little the drift of his brother’s thought. Perhaps it is the knowledge of burned Sirion, and all that was lost with it, that haunts Elrond now – or perhaps the long shadow of Amon Ereb, that mausoleum in which they came of age, where the sons of Fëanor mourned the lost days of their glory, and Maglor’s every lullaby was half a dirge.

Summary
Elwing was her name — an odd name, to go with certainly the oddest person we had ever met. The tower she dwelt in was tall and white, and lay some miles to the north of our village: barely more than an hour’s walk, for two bored children in search of adventure, and yet certainly more isolated than anyone else we knew. We liked to stand one at each end of the narrow, winding staircase, and listen to the echoes of our voices ringing against the stone. At the top of the tower the stairs opened up into a little turret room, bare and simple, with a neatly made bed tucked against one wall and a small clay oven beside the other. That was, at first, the main draw: for Elwing was a prodigious baker, and generous with the fruits of her labour. When first she sighted us playing on the cliffside she gave us warm sweet pastries flecked with nuts, and many times after a loaf or two of fresh bread — to carry home to our mother, she said, although more often than not it had disappeared by the time we arrived.

Summary
Valinor was every bit as beautiful as the songs promised.
Its streets glittered with the dust of diamonds, gleaming under the radiant light of a sun that shone brighter, purer over the hallowed lands than it ever had over Middle-earth. The peaks of the Pelori, soaring and snowcapped, loomed pristine in the distance, mocking her with every glimpse. These were not mountains that had ever known the tread of an orc's foot, nor suffered spilt blood or harrowed screams. Even the sands of Eldamar were white and silken underfoot, nothing like the abrading grit of the beaches of Belfalas where her mother had once reigned.
Celebrían hated it.
