Bare feet slipped against the sea soaked shore as she leapt from the boat into the pulsing cold of the harbour, hissing a creative explicit out between clenched teeth, hands tugging against the roll of the tide while she pulled the small craft up into the pebbled beach; the hull scraping against the shore in protest as she tied a clumsy bowline knot.
Cursing again, she yanked the rope free to redo it; if she lost another boat, she’d never hear the end of it.
Her fingers hummed with cold, the frigid air of deep winter sinking down into her bones, but the lights in the forest danced the way she’d come to recognize and she hopped quickly up into the boat again to pull the small bag of provisions from its secured place, hefting the satchel onto her shoulder.

“You’re awake,” a strong clipped voice came from the other side of the room. Emma turned, grip tightening even further. She met his eyes, dark rimmed and deep blue, narrowed slightly in contemplation of her. “And alive.”
She said nothing, watching him with an unease which skittered sharply up and down her spine.
“You have nothing to fear from me, lass,” he muttered, raising his left arm from his knee to rest it on the table. A gleam of metal caught her attention.
Neal had spoken tales of a man with a hook for a hand. A man who was a monster. A traitorous pirate who had killed his mother and driven his father to become the beast of a creature caged beneath the palace.
She had thought them merely fancy tales. Nothing more. But the man cocked an eyebrow, a sneer breaking across his face, half hidden in shadow.
She knew of this man. The villain who had lived for hundreds of years, who sold children to demons and toyed with the lives of women and men who dared cross his path.
Neal may have been a liar, but there was no mistaking the pirate in front of her.

A car door slammed and threw him suddenly back into the present. The cases of cranberry ginger ale sat beside the bench, stockpiled out of fear that the drink was seasonal and Emma’s obsession with it may outlast it’s purchasing life, and he grasped the handle to carry it into the house, pausing at the backdoor, letting the chill of the evening settle through his heart. He missed it, the call of the gulls overhead at the crash of the waves at the beach which had been so much a part of their lives.
This was home.

The handle was cool against his skin, but the light from inside was welcoming, like it had always been in their life before.
