  Summary

  The bathypelagic zone or bathyal zone (from Greek βαθύς, deep) is the part of the open ocean that extends from a depth of 1,000 to 4,000 m below the ocean surface. It lies between the mesopelagic above and the abyssopelagic below. The bathypelagic is also known as the Midnight Zone because of the lack of sunlight. The bathypelagic zone is characterized by a nearly constant temperature of approximately 4 °C (39 °F) and a salinity range of 33-35 g/kg.

  Summary

  The ''aggressive spillover'' hypothesis for sexual cannibalism suggests that the more aggressive a female is concerning prey, the more likely the female is to cannibalize a potential mate. The decision of a female to cannibalize a male is not defined by the nutritional value or genetic advantage of males but instead depends strictly on her aggressive state. Females displaying aggressive characteristics tend to grow larger than other females, and display continuous cannibalistic behavior.
