Summary
When Vash woke, it was with someone else cradled in his arms. That wasn't unheard of. It happened, sometimes, with the drinking.
So he supposed this was another of those mornings – that he would extract himself from bed as carefully as possible so as not to wake his partner, collect his things, leave them a glass of water and a note, and make his way back to his own room to go through his usual workout. Maybe find himself some breakfast before he met up with Wolfwood. Normal stuff.
Except when he opened his eyes to take in his surroundings and plot his escape, he was hit by one terrible, unconscionable revelation.
The person in his arms was Meryl.

Something about Vash's smile suddenly looked off. "Oh. Uh."
He didn't say anything else for a very long and confusing moment, until it slowly dawned on Meryl that perhaps she had just said something strange. Something she never said.

After a disastrous accidental confession (of sorts), Meryl tries to move on. Vash gets in the way.

“Peace offering?” Meryl repeats, and raises a sceptical brow. “What, are you being chased already?” She pops onto her toes, peering over Vash’s shoulder. Vash lets out a laugh—genuine-sounding, Millie thinks—and gently pushes Meryl back down flat. Then ruffles her hair, apparently as charmed by the rooster crown as Millie is.
“No,” Vash responds, before clearing his throat. Some of that warmth has left his tone when he speaks again. “But… well, if you two will humour me a little bit, I’ve got somewhere I wanted to take you both. I have a friend who’s letting me rent her car, so… Should just be a two-day’s journey over to the east.”
Meryl’s lips purse with thought. “East, that’s…”
“December,” Millie finishes.
