Summary
They sit in silence for a while, and it's almost as if there's a weight hanging between them now. Darry doesn't push the issue, but there's something about the haziness of Ponyboy's eyes that has Darry reaching forward to feel for his forehead. He's hot to the touch, and he frowns. “Do you feel sick?”
Pony shakes his head. “I dunno. I'm okay. You should go back to bed.”
“You don't make the rules 'round here, kid. How long have you been feeling like this?” Darry asks.
“I ain't sick.”
“You're burning up a bit there, kiddo,” he tells him quietly, pushing Ponyboy’s bangs away from his face.
“Not true,” he argues, shaking his head.
Darry furrows his eyebrows. “Why are you arguing with me?”
“Am not,” Pony replies, like it’s autopilot just to counter anything Darry has to say to him.
He rolls his eyes. “Alright, tough guy. Hold still for a second.”~
or the one where darry tries his best to navigate a sick ponyboy without soda. ponyboy wonders if he's ruining darry's life. darry wonders if his brother is clinically stupid for asking a question like that.Bookmarked by TheVioletContradiction

“Ponyboy…” he says, softly, almost inaudibly. “That is... quite possibly the dumbest thing you have ever said to me.” His voice is soft and tired, his words coming slow and measured, but he means it.
Now Pony is confused, his eyes even wider than before. “What?” He looks genuinely puzzled, staring at Darry like he's got eight heads.
“I'm really hoping you're just saying all that nonsense 'cause your head is on fire, and not 'cause you mean it. Because that is ridiculous, Ponyboy. You could never ruin anything,” Darry explains, feeling like he's going nuts. Pony looks at him with this weird kind of expression, it's hard to describe. Something like guilt, something like bewilderment. Darry continues on, “I know things have been rough for us, Pone. But I wouldn't-- I couldn't-- give this up for anything.” His voice grows quieter as he speaks. “Ever.” He then closes the gap between them, resting his hands on his little brother's shoulders, looking directly into his eyes as he speaks, searching, “You hear me?”

Summary
"'Where are Dally and Johnny?' Darry asked. His voice was real serious now, all tiredness forgotten. 'Are they okay?' He strode to the kitchen and dug around in the icebox, grabbing an ice pack that he tossed to Two-Bit.
'They're alright,' Two-Bit said. 'But the cops showed up not long after the fight started and they got arrested. Both of 'em, even though Johnny didn't do nothin', other than try and pull off the guys who were beatin' Dally to a pulp—'
Ponyboy sucked in a breath. 'Johnny got arrested?'"
Or, Ponyboy doesn't go to the drive-in with Dally and Johnny that night. Without him, Dally gets into an altercation with the Socs, setting off a wave of violence and unforeseen consequences that neither Ponyboy nor the rest of Tulsa is prepared for.

Summary
That night at dinner, he sees Soda and Darry watching him closely, like how you’d watch a glass you knocked over, teetering on the edge of a table. As if Ponyboy is going to shatter now that he can’t scribble out his pain onto every piece of paper in the house.
But he doesn’t shatter. For the first time in a long while, he feels… maybe not good, but okay. Like maybe, someday down the road, he could feel good again.
