    Tommy felt childishly stupid. He knew what a car was, he’d even been in cars before! They shouldn’t have been scary to him, yet he was filled with a deep, painful fear when he heard that deep rumble. He couldn’t hold back the frightened mewls that escaped him, and soon enough he felt his box being picked up and moved gently.

    “Tallulah, what are you doing?”

    “He’s scared, Papa, he needs someone.”

    Tommy could hear the man sigh deeply. “Tallulah, he’s not the nicest. If you aren’t careful–”

    Tallulah let out a very loud, dramatic huff that made her father pause. There was no noise in the lull, but Tommy could tell the man had had a battle with himself and lost it.

    “Fine, just be careful, Tallulah. I won’t punish him for trying to protect himself.”

    Suddenly the top of Tommy’s box opened wide. Light filtered in and from looking up he could see Tallulah’s face peeking down at him. She smiled at him, something warm and calming.

    “It’s okay, little guy, I’ve got you.”

    OR, Tommy is a cat-shifter who has been stuck in an animal shelter, Tallulah convinces her dad to let her adopt him. Que fluff and minor angst.
