Remnant, agony, soul energy, generic plot device, whatever epithet or descriptor one uses- ultimately it was just condensed suffering and pain from something sentient made manifest.
But just because it’s most concentrated and most easily extractable from the pain of human children doesn’t mean that is the only potential source. Nor is living after death the only potential use case.
