Loki was warned that if he failed Thanos, he would have nowhere to run and would face pain unlike anything he could imagine. Loki always assumed the titan was threatening him with torture and an agonizing death. He didn't realize that torture isn't the only way to hurt someone and after the titan's defeat, Loki realizes just how cruel Thanos really was.
