Summary

"It was like Beth wasn’t sure of anything anymore. She wanted to simply ignore it all, maybe even cut ties and go back to just being a mother, maybe even get a legit job so she could keep providing. But she was forced to face the changes between her and Rio when she walked into her bedroom to find him waiting for her inside.
He was stood on the other end of the room, leaning back against her chest of drawers. There was no usual smile or mischievous smirk in place. In fact, he looked serious. Beth kept her eyes on him as she removed her jacket and placed it on the bed.
“What are you doing here?” she asked as she walked towards him, stopping by the end of the bed."

Beth needs a second to regroup, so she drops Rio’s hand and turns to face him right before they get to the exit. Rio doesn’t look all that surprised, which makes Beth feel like he assumes she was never going to go through with it, and even though he’s more right than wrong, this offends her. Beth’s so tired of playing into everyone’s expectations of her as a boring, dowdy housewife, so somehow his acceptance only steels her resolve.
She’s going to hook up with this man with a neck tattoo in her car in a parking lot, and nothing is going to stop her—except Rio changing his mind, or maybe some sort of natural disaster, or if Ruby calls because there’s some sort of kid emergency or—
Beth really needs to stop thinking.
