12/4/24: I’m putting this fic on hiatus because I think I can do the whole thing better. I think Dina deserves a more in-depth examination of her story. I’m just not ready to get all angsty and depressed again. I’ll come back to it when feeling happy and healed gets boring again.
Update, 12/9/25: welp.. it took an entire year, but I’m back. No post updates yet. But I’m working on it.

This is my take on a post-canon reconciliation. In which Dina never stopped loving Ellie, and deep down always wished she’d come home. It’ll be a little bumpy, and Ellie hates herself for a while, and Dina needs some time, but she’s not going to waste what little precious time they have in this ruthless, unpredictable, and unforgiving world by holding on to her own hurt and anger out of pure spite.
Or: Ellie survives, much to her own dismay. But if she was really intent on dying, then she would have found a way. Her own iron will, combined with Dina’s love and support, will pull her through her own darkness.
The happy ending starts somewhere in the middle.
If you want a fic where Dina hates Ellie for an unreasonable amount of time and makes her jump through ten thousand hoops to prove herself then this is not the one.
