An eye in the storm. “I don’t know, Iz. What are we doing?” Casey’s voice has changed. It’s not angry. It’s a challenge. The question hangs in the air between them like a wall. They stare at each other, breathing heavily, each sure the other can hear her heart thundering.

Panam thinks about how, not that long ago, V had run her hands over her legs, her thighs. Then Panam thinks of how every fiber of her being wanted more, wanted her back, but she chose instead to be a coward. She chose instead to turn V down. And now all that Panam is left with are what little they have shared in the quiet together: Their tense, shaky breaths in the Basilisk; the sand howling and throwing itself at the trailer walls in the night; the way they bundled together in the intimate warmth of a campfire. Panam thinks, almost miserably, of how V’s body could have been pressed against hers if she hadn’t stopped her then, of how her hands could have been feeling for every curve and crevice on Panam’s skin, her mouth ghosting over Panam’s face and neck in hot, deep breaths. Panam could have taken V’s face in her hands, could have lost herself in her eyes until they melted together on that fucking couch.
Panam wouldn’t stop her this time, this she knows.
