WHOOPS Part 2:
Ilya's standing in the center of the set, under lights bright enough to count as a fucking war crime from the way they make his head pound, wearing his full lower gear - pads, pants, skates - and absolutely nothing else from the waist up except for approximately five million dollars worth of diamonds draped around his neck like he's some kind of feral Russian soocialite. Which Shane supposes he kinda was, in a previous life.
There's fake blood trickling from his nose. Artfully smudged across his upper lip. Someone's mussed his hair just right, that perfect post-fight chaos that makes him look dangerous and untouchable and so stupidly hot that Shane wants to bite something.

Summary
The woman had her hair tucked under a knit hat, and her eyes were actually kind.
"You are cold," she said.
"I'm fine," Shane said. His teeth betrayed him with a chatter.
She unwound her scarf from her own neck and wrapped it around his.
Eight-year-old Shane goes to a hockey camp in Moscow, becomes a victim to language barrier, and gets rescued by a woman who gives him her scarf and tells him snow angels are real.
Eighteen years later, Ilya finds out his mother had already met the love of his life.

Summary
Ilya is seven when he understands, for the first time, that he is not like any of the other kids at school. He has always known he is strange, but it takes a long time for him to realize that his strangeness is unique.
None of the other kids have a mother who came from the sea. Everyone else has a mother who grew up in Moscow or St. Petersburg or Novgorod. Not Ilya. Ilya's Mama says she was on the beach when his father found her and stole her pelt. That he keeps her by threatening to destroy it.

Summary
Shane had mostly dreamt of hockey as a child. It was so like him, his father had said, to practice in his sleep. Then for all of his twenties he’d dreamt of Ilya, always Ilya, in different places but somehow the same every time, like he was haunting him. Lately, he’d dreamt of a lot of things. The Voyageurs, their voices muffled and echoing around dark corners in his head. Arenas he’d played in years ago, from Sochi to Vancouver. His old apartment in Montreal, with its great open windows like a fortressing surveying a dark, glittering city. And still Ilya. He always dreamt of Ilya.
“This is gonna sound stupid,” Shane laughed lightly, “but I think I feel so happy that I’m sad again.”
Ilya smiled. “I know this feeling. Like you have so much love, and no where for it to go. So you do not know what to do."
