Jo has been running away since before she can really remember. Constantly moving house, constantly transferring from job to job, constantly escaping. And she’s good at it - she’s more than able to find good rent leases that last only a few months, easily persuades her higher ups that her constant job hopping is driven by a desire to improve her work, to rise up the ranks. She’s especially good at leaving lovers, leaving friends. Telling them she’ll call and then never keeping her word.
Yes, Jo is excellent at running.
And then along comes Kate.
Or in which Kate is new to MIT, and a very lost Jo is confused by how at home Kate makes her feel.

When Jo sees that instruction, she realises she'll do anything to protect Kate, she's had enough, she won't let them hurt Kate too.
True to canon (mostly) until that scene in episode 5, because Jo's not going to do that, in fact, she's going to make sure no one does that.Or, what I think should have happened at the end of season 6.
