Summary
He does not see them sailing into Syracuse.
Moments between wakefulness and slumber spent conjuring up orange sails among familiar cliffs and towers, night after night, for months, and he is not there to see them come. At least they have done so frequently enough in his imagination that he does not need to, he supposes.
Or: Marina and Sinbad return to Syracuse thirteen months after leaving together, and Proteus suddenly has to navigate touches, memories and feelings.
