Mike, in particular, is struggling to cope with these new, emerging dynamics, especially when El and Will start hanging around the basketball team (read: one particular member). He struggles to recreate the friendships/relationships from the previous summer while the rest start branching out and trying new things.

The rest of the basketball team was full of a bunch of foul-mouthed meatheads. They picked on the weak. Mike, Lucas, and Dustin as members of the Hellfire Club, had once been their prime targets. Pushing and shoving in the hallways between classes, deliberate tripping during PE, these things happened almost weekly.
But none of them grew wise to the fact that Will Byers, the quiet boy who kept to his notebook, was actually their captain’s obedient little slut.
